Mahukona, Hawai'i

Mahukona is a small exposed bay located on the North Kohala coast of the island of Hawai'i about 10 miles north of Kawaihae. Once the main port for shipping of Kohala Sugar, the area now is a wonderful diving site with an area for launching small boats. Camping is also allowed and their is often a fantastic view of Maui. Mahukona is famous for incredible underwater visibility, abundant marine life, and a shipwreck to explore, all in relatively shallow water. The area is exposed to heavy winter swells, so if the surf is up it is often not accessible.
