Kahalu'u, Hawai'i

Potential Threats

Kahalu'u is a very special place surrounded by a high amount of human activity. Surrounded by hotels, a very busy highway, and experiencing a high amount of visitors, there are a large number of potential threats to this reef, but so far it remains relatively pristine. Fish feeding is very common here but should be discouraged because of the high potential for altering the normal fish community structure. Other concerns are people sitting and standing on coral or touching coral with their hands of fins. Corals are delicate animals and chronic human disturbance can cause permanent damage.
