These
fishes bite off large chunks of live coral and dead coral overgrown by turf algae. The
coral is ground up by mill-like teeth in the throat. Their voracious grazing often leaves
scars on rocks.
As a result of their grazing
activities, Uhu, or parrotfish, create huge quantities of excreted sediment which
contributes to the building of white coral beaches.
